Salaam Bombay! : The less heard Indian Masterpiece

The Hollywood movies kindled in the Indian subcontinent gained much appreciation over the past decade or so after The Slumdog Millionaire  topped the charts with whopping $600 collections worldwide. Later the Life of Pi  gained significant attention among the global audience.
It's a tedious venture for a non-English category movie that too derived from a sub-continent region to achieve global reputation. At a point of time when the wide-releases of a movie was unheard, the global acceptance was solely associated to the Academy award's and film festival exposures.

There were even instances where the movie would be re-released for global audience after it's triumph at the awards, like the scenario recently happened with The Parasite. As we shift the focus back to India as far as Indian movie enthusiasts are considered, a cry for Indian movies not getting the required global attention in the awards are prominent over the years. But it's a lesser known fact that once a Bollywood movie back in the days got the attention of the Oscars but failed to get the attention from its fellow Indians.

Salaam Bombay! is the about the dreams of a 12 year old boy in the streets of Bombay and the many lives that revolve around him in the slums of city. The movie was directed by the debutante Mira Nair, in 1988. It is quite touching and thought provoking combined with its distinguished style of making. For a Bollywood movie of the 80s timeline, at a point when movies were all about money- making and marketing this movie really stands out for its directional brilliance and standout frames and it never ceases to amaze anyone who watches it after almost three decades. Its one of those movies that gets you hooked into the plot that at some point it feels like it's just the events happening around you.

The portrayal of the human emotions and deep-rooted poverty in India even till date is well discussed in the movie. The movie stands out from the typical Indian "award movie" style of making with fast moving story line and interesting characters on the go. The star studded cast of Nana Patekar and  Irfan Khan also adds to the essence of the movie. Altogether the movie is definitely worth a watch for all strata of audience and it's one of those movies that paved a path for Indian movies to be recognized on the global stage.
